2 Person Hot Tub

What makes a 2 person hot tub (and what "2-4 person" means)

An inflatable 2 person hot tub is a spa that its maker rates for two adults. In practice almost no inflatable is sold for exactly two: the labels are "2-3 person" for the 170cm tubs and "2-4 person" for the 175-180cm ones. The lower number is how many can sit with their legs stretched out; the higher number is how many fit sitting upright, knees bent.

That makes the label worth reading closely. A 2-3 person tub is the snug choice for a couple, while a 2-4 person tub is roomy for two and still takes friends. What really decides comfort is the space inside, because inflatable walls are thick: the 170cm St Lucia is 124cm across inside, the 180cm Miami 132cm and the 175cm Dellonda 135cm.

A two seater hot tub also holds far less water than a family model. The six here hold 605-800 litres, against 1,000 litres or more for most 6 person inflatable hot tubs. Less water means a quicker first heat, a lighter tub and a smaller electricity bill.

Which two seater hot tub suits you?

Lay-Z-Spa Miami AirJet: the safe all-rounder

The Miami is the most reviewed tub in the range, with 4.5 stars from 1,245 ratings. At 180cm across with a 132cm interior it gives two people plenty of room, and its 669 litres heat at about 1.5-2°C an hour. An insulating lid and top cover are in the box, and its spec sheet puts it at 696kg once filled.

Lay-Z-Spa Cancun AirJet: square, for a corner

Same 669 litres and 120 AirJets as the Miami, but square at 180 x 180cm, so it tucks into the corner of a patio and gives each bather a side to lean on. Lay-Z-Spa quotes 12 hours to heat from cold to 40°C, 5 minutes to inflate and about 45 minutes to set up.

Lay-Z-Spa Boracay Smart AirJet: app control

The only tub here with Wi-Fi control, so you can switch the heater on from your phone before you get home. The 120 AirJets have two intensity levels, and it comes with a reinforced locking cover and a built-in RCD.

Dellonda DL90: rattan look, most room inside

The Dellonda has the widest interior here at 135cm and the most water at 800 litres. Its smart pump reheats only when the water drops 2°C, and the 5.3m cable gives more choice over where the tub sits. The rattan effect wall looks less like a paddling pool than grey vinyl does; for more of that style see our wood effect inflatable hot tubs.

Lay-Z-Spa Aruba AirJet: compact but deep

A 170cm tub that still holds 800 litres. It weighs just 26.3kg empty, has a 1.5kW heater and a 13 amp plug with an RCD, and is rated for up to 3 adults. Pick it if your space is tight but you want deeper water than the St Lucia.

Lay-Z-Spa St Lucia AirJet: the smallest fill

At 605 litres the St Lucia has the least water to heat of the six, so it's quickest from cold and the cheapest to keep warm. The interior is 124cm across, cosy for two. It has a folding touch-screen control and a filter that moves 1,325 litres an hour.

How much space does a hot tub for 2 need?

Measure for the tub plus a margin. Allow 30-50cm around the wall for getting in and out, for the lid when it's off and for the pump, which sits outside the wall on all of these. That means a level patch of about 2.3m square for a 170cm tub and 2.5m square for a 180cm one.

Weight on patios and decking

A litre of water weighs a kilo, so even the smallest 2 person hot tub here holds 605kg of water before anyone gets in. The Miami's spec sheet gives 696kg filled; add two adults and you are near 850kg spread over a circle 1.8m wide. Paving or a level concrete base is ideal. Check older timber decking with a builder before you fill a tub on it, and never put one on a balcony without a structural engineer's say-so.

Indoors or in a garden room

Small tubs are popular in garden rooms and garages. You need a floor that takes the weight, a drain or outside route for 600-800 litres of water, and good ventilation, because 40°C water puts a lot of moisture into the air.

Running costs of a 2 person inflatable hot tub

The main cost is heat. Raising water by 1°C takes about 0.00116kWh per litre, so heating a fresh fill from 10°C to 38°C takes roughly:

  • 605 litres (St Lucia): about 20kWh
  • 669 litres (Miami, Cancun, Boracay): about 22kWh
  • 800 litres (Aruba, Dellonda): about 26kWh

Real figures are higher because heat escapes through the walls and lid while it warms up, and those numbers are only the first fill. Day to day, the bill depends on how often you use it, the weather and how well the lid fits. Multiply the kWh by your unit rate to get a cost; Ofgem's energy price cap page lists the current cap rates, and Appliances Direct has a worked example of what a hot tub costs to run.

A tub for two holds about a third less water than a 4-6 person model, so it's cheaper to fill, heat and keep warm on the same settings. Keep the lid on, put an insulating mat underneath and use the timer to cut it further.

Inflatable vs rigid 2 person hot tubs

Most of the 2 person hot tubs Google shows are rigid acrylic spas from specialist dealers, often priced from £2,500 to over £5,000. They have moulded seats, water hydrotherapy jets, thicker insulation and often Bluetooth speakers, and they stay where they are delivered.

An inflatable 2 person hot tub costs a fraction of that. Four of ours were under £400 when we checked and the other two under £500. You get a bubble massage from AirJets in the floor rather than targeted jets, and the walls lose heat faster, but you can deflate it for winter, take it when you move and set it up in an afternoon without a crane or an electrician. Comparing budgets? See inflatable hot tubs under £400, hot tubs under £500 and hot tubs under £300.

Setting up and looking after a hot tub for two

  • Use a suitable outdoor socket. The Lay-Z-Spa tubs come with a 13 amp plug and an RCD. They draw a steady load for hours, so avoid indoor extension leads; the IET explains why in its guide to domestic electrical supplies to hot tubs.
  • Fill it with warm water if you can. At 1.5-2.5°C an hour, a cold fill takes most of a day to reach 38-40°C; the Boracay's listing allows 12-24 hours.
  • Keep the water clean. Warm water suits bacteria, including legionella. Run the filter daily, test and dose the water, rinse the cartridges and change the water regularly; the HSE's spa-pool guidance sets out why. Five of these tubs include a ChemConnect dispenser.
  • Clip the lid on. Use the safety clips whenever the tub isn't in use, especially with children or pets around.
  • Plan for winter. Freeze Shield or frost protection helps on the Lay-Z-Spa models, but check the manual: in a hard frost some makers advise draining and packing an inflatable away.

If you'd rather a shape that's easy to cover and fits more patios, our round inflatable hot tubs include five of the six tubs above alongside bigger models.

2 person hot tub FAQs

How big is a 2 person hot tub?

The inflatable ones here are 170-180cm across and 66-70cm tall, holding 605-800 litres. Inside, they measure 124-135cm across where the listing gives a figure.

Can 3 or 4 people fit in a 2 person hot tub?

In a 2-4 person tub like the Miami, Cancun, Boracay or Dellonda, yes, sitting upright. In the 170cm St Lucia or Aruba, three is the limit.

How long does a small hot tub take to heat up?

These tubs heat at 1.5-2.5°C an hour, so expect 12-24 hours from a cold fill. Filling with warm water and keeping the lid on shortens it.

Is a 2 person hot tub cheaper to run than a bigger one?

Yes. It holds less water and has a smaller surface losing heat, so on the same settings and with the same cover it uses less electricity than a 4-6 person tub.

Which 2 person hot tub has the most room inside?

Of the tubs that list it, the Dellonda DL90 at 135cm across, then the Lay-Z-Spa Miami at 132cm.

Can I leave a two person hot tub up all year?

Many people do with the Lay-Z-Spa models, which have Freeze Shield in the pump. Keep it running and covered in cold weather, and follow the manual on hard frosts.
